ART-ADVOCACY

L.A.S.T.'s outreach team consists of researchers, artists and designers, who share the common goal of raising awareness of complex issues through art-advocacy activities.

When selecting a theme or tackling commissioned projects, the team always starts with rigorous humanistic research to define the conceptual framework. Subsequently, it translates this research into multimedia artistic languages, enabling an engaging and accessible narrative.

The result of this creative process is then exhibited through the organisation of public awareness events, hosted in museum spaces, dedicated to human rights or in public and institutional venues.

These events not only provide an opportunity for artistic expression, but also for dialogue and reflection on crucial issues affecting contemporary society.

OUR PROJECTS

Biometrics of absence
"Biometrics of Absence" is a multidisciplinary project that integrates visual art with participatory writing and anthropological research. In the visual component, the fingerprint is used like lines on a sheet, reflecting the idea of identity according to Sam, a person from Syria who traveled the Balkan route to reach the Netherlands. The text is the result of participatory writing work. Anthropological research delves into the profound meaning of identity and highlights how migrant individuals are reduced to mere decoding based on social expectations through the biometrization system, rather than being recognized for their uniqueness.

Inhabitable

'Inhabitable' is a project based on socio-political research that will be exhibited together with the visual component, with the aim of bringing to light the global situation of those who have been forced to flee and cannot find refuge in a safe country. Their identity is compromised in the social context, and their dwelling is limited to wearing clothes discarded by society and donated to humanitarian organisations. The visual output consists of a patchwork work measuring 12 x 12 metres, made by sewing together 100 kg of clothes by workers and asylum seekers from the Linea Adele tailoring shop in Milan. This large fabric will be exhibited as a dwelling in which people will be able to move around inside and listen to an audio production narrating the different states in which a migrant individual finds himself forced to live, thus losing his identity.

The project was realised in collaboration with the Linea Adele social tailoring shop in Milan and the United Nations High Commission in Vienna.

Sights Without Rigts

Sights Without Rights is a virtual experience usable via computer or Oculus Quest that accompanies the visitor to discover the historiography, culture and reality of Palestinian and Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Through a participatory language, with images, interviews, writings, videos, and the voices of people in the camp, one can immerse oneself in the reality of a refugee camp in Lebanon through a dual point of view: that of the observed and the observer.
